ADHD Blog On Understanding Trump’s Behavior : Homework

Several Republican Senators reportedly cringed while reading the transcript of the phone conversation between the Presidents of the US and Ukraine. Mr. Trump had failed to do his homework, again.
After campaigning on claims that his opponent was trying to rig the 2016 election, and after more than two years of stories about Russians attempting to influence the vote, Mr. Trump, in releasing the transcript, conveyed zero awareness of how incriminating it appeared. Even though it was vitally important to his retaining the presidency, he had not done the homework to learn what was legal when talking with foreign heads of state. He had no idea what constituted normal behavior, or what crossed the line into inappropriate actions, or even blatant law-breaking, or possibly, treason.
ADHD causes individuals to focus on what is interesting to them, forsaking attending to what is important. One of the formal criteria for ADHD states “Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (e.g., schoolwork or homework; for older adolescents and adults, preparing reports, completing forms, reviewing lengthy papers).”
