Every medical report on body-focuses repetitive behaviors makes a big point about how these movements can cause damage, scarring and risk of infections. While I have seen a handful of such instances in over three decades of clinical work, these seem to be rare outcomes, that we should be aware of, but not over-hype.

So yes, shame is usually the biggest downside, and I agree we should keep trying to eliminate that.
