I appreciate the close reading, but no, the 1888 is accurate - those were the very early days of experimentation on animals to try to get some initial grasp on what the brain was doing. Back then there were ferocious debates about whether there was any localization of function within the brain, or whether all of it just somehow worked together to create its output.
