I appreciate your thoughtful and in depth commentary.

I think that both personal experiences and value judgments come into play with decisions to commit suicide or not. Specifically, whether one feels that life must be lived at all costs, versus feeling that some versions of life are not worth living, I would place more in the realm of values than of personal experiences. Certainly experiences can shape values, as well as values shaping experiences.

I will try to be more mindful of how I use unconscious and subconscious, but the first definition I Googled (not necessarily the best arbiter) parsed them thus: "The subconscious is that part of consciousness that is not currently in focal awareness. The unconscious mind consists of the processes in the mind that occur automatically and are not available to introspection, and include thought processes, memory, affect, and motivation." With those definitions, both subconscious and unconscious forces are likely to be at play, but you are absolutely right, the "desires" wouldn't be unconscious.
