I strongly concur. Many sleep problems are the result of anxiety, depression, ADHD, or other conditions, and most often when they are appropriately addressed there is no need for additional sleep medication, particularly long term.
Ironically, there are a few studies which suggest that low dose trazodone (the range commonly used for sleep) might actually decrease the risk of later developing dementia. In which case it might be a good thing to be taking long term. Trazodone at those doses may have some anti-inflammatory effects in the brain. But this benefit has not been detected in every study, so it is premature to recommend people take trazodone for the purpose of fending off dementia.
