I think that the removal of homosexuality from the DSM demonstrates psychiatry's attempt to rectify mistakes, and remove personal and political considerations from its diagnostic criteria. That is how good science works, by incorporating new knowledge. Psychiatry will always involve a dialogue between neuroscience and society.

I also agree with you that psychiatry needs to earn trust. But trust and veracity are not the same thing. People believe lots of things that are clearly false, and fail to trust many true statements.
