If you accept the (unverifiable) premise that the reward system was designed to help us find food, and not become someone else's food, then being able to figure out what is rewarding, and find ways to attain the reward, were very important for our survival. It is more that now, when for many food is easily available and dangers scarce, much of this search for rewards is directed in not-so-useful directions.
