I'm really glad that you brought up this angle. Most of the researchers interpret this data as similarly inclined people hanging out together and learning from each other. You astutely point out that in addition to this, being with people in the very early stages of alcohol/drug abuse, depression and anxiety can itself be draining, and predispose their cohorts of any of these conditions.
