Your words pulled me back to fall of 1982, when I had just started medical school. I was trying to share an article in Science magazine https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.7089584 about AIDS with my new classmates. They all dismissed it as of no concern to them because it "only" infected gay men, and wasn't going to be a significant public health issue.
