Thanks for reinforcing the message that as doctors we are role models for good health whether we want to be or not.

Your article triggered a recollection of an interaction with an orthopedic knee specialist after I fractured my knee cap when I was a marathon runner and in my early 30's. After six weeks of "rest and recovery" he told me that I could start riding a bicycle, but not to resume running yet. I asked whether biking was a good idea, with all of the hills in San Francisco - wouldn't that create undo strain? His reply: "Don't bicycles have all those gears nowadays?" The man was so rotund that he had not seen his own knees in several decades. He knew a lot about knees, but not much about exercise or general health.
