There are many different definitions of treatment resistant depression, the most common require that at least two or three antidepressants have been tried at therapeutic doses for a reasonable period of time (usually at least 6-8 weeks). But these could all be from the same class of antidepressants. So the most common definition of TRD may lump together people with very different histories of treatment failure.
