This brought me back to my high school Latin teacher, who taught exactly what you say, that carpe diem meant "pluck the day" and he would illustrate it with a delicate plucking motion, not a grasping, seizing motion. He'd also point out that our hand and finger bones (carpals and metacarpals) came from the same Latin root.
