A.B.O.U.T. Behavior #23 : Not Waiting

The hitherto obsequious attorney general created a brouhaha this week by objecting to the president’s tweeting during active Department of Justice cases. Mr. Barr said, “I cannot do my job here at the department with a constant background commentary that undercuts me.” Mr. Trump frequently and publicly comments about ongoing trials involving his own associates.

Putting aside the issues of First Amendment rights to free speech, the powers of the presidency, and the merits of individual cases, previous presidents did not intrude into active court cases. Nor did hand-picked attorney generals need to berate their bosses for commenting on cases before verdicts were announced or sentences delivered. But Mr. Trump’s has made a habit of speaking out at inappropriate moments.

The 17th of the 18 diagnostic symptoms delineating ADHD states “Often has difficult waiting his or her turn.” The president, on virtually a daily basis, demonstrates difficulties waiting his turn, thus fulfilling this ADHD criterion.

He pushes in front of others, both literally and figuratively, at diplomatic events, photo shoots, and debates. He leaks information regarding pending agreements and negotiations before he actually secures deals. He often manages to steal his own thunder by announcing…
