Identifying and addressing ADHD can decrease stigma and suffering.

Yes, Joe Biden has ADHD. Yes, this is verifiably true, not just an assertion. Yes, after writing a book and over sixty articles on Donald Trump’s ADHD, I probably am obsessed with identifying adult ADHD. No, that doesn’t mean that I think that most people have ADHD. Yes, both Trump and Biden can have ADHD, despite manifesting large differences in their histories, personalities, and goals in life. And yes, talking about ADHD can help mitigate the misery stemming from failing to diagnose and treat this condition.

First, a reminder from my discussions about Mr. Trump’s ADHD. We use diagnoses to understand, predict, and treat conditions, not as weapons to be wielded against individuals or groups of people. The next paragraph summarizes how ADHD provides an understanding, allows predictions, and explains treatment options for Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump’s behavior makes no sense without awareness of his ADHD. Narcissism or other putative problems do not explain why he is so physically restless, why he constantly blurts out impulsive comments, why he ignores so much information, or why he so frequently undermines his own successes. As for prediction, knowing that he had ADHD, and was not just acting in “campaign mode” during the 2016 election…
